A routine traffic stop by a police officer lead to charges being filed against an Olalla man for unlawful possession of a firearm.
According to charging papers, Jacob Todd Kirk, 36, was charged with one count of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm Jan. 30 in Kitsap County District Court.
Court records stated that a Port Orchard police officer stopped the suspect on South Street after he determined Kirk, a convicted felon, was driving with a suspended license.
After the officer arrested the suspect, a man came up to the officer and told him there was a gun lying in his driveway in the 500 block of South Street.
The officer found a Ruger P-35 handgun with fresh mud and grass on the firearm, which was cocked and ready to fire, stated court papers.
Court papers stated that the suspect told the officer the gun was in the car when he borrowed it and confessed he threw the gun out the car window. Five minutes after retrieving the gun, a school bus unloaded about 10 children in close proximity to where the firearm was found.
A female passenger traveling with the suspect told the officers about two black bags that the suspect asked her to put in her purse. Officers also found two scales and methamphetamine, according to court records.
The suspect was taken and booked into the Kitsap County Jail. He also was charged with possession of methamphetamine, reckless endangerment and driving with a suspended license. Bail was set at $100,000.
