KINGSTON — It was smoking that eventually led to the arrest of a burglary suspect in the Eglon area.

Terrance Adams, 36, of Hansville was arrested by Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies April 19 for first-degree burglary. Among the charges against Adams: a home burglary in Eglon reported Feb. 10, which included three stolen collector guns.

According to court documents, the home owner called 9-1-1 Feb. 10 after returning from a trip and found his home on the 33000 block of Eglon Road in Kingston burglarized.

The suspect had attempted to drill into the outside door to remove the latch, but was unsuccessful and smashed in a window next to the door. The suspect attempted to drill the door from the garage into the house, then shot at the window with a pellet or BB gun. The report states the suspect eventually kicked down the door.

A television, computer, speakers, pre-amp, three rifles, a chainsaw and a sledge hammer were allegedly taken. The guns were in working order. The suspect also took some V8 and beer from the refrigerator.

Though the sheriff’s office had suspects, it was a cigarette butt that led to the arrest.

The owner of the Eglon home found a cigarette butt on his kitchen floor. After turning it over to law enforcement, a DNA test was run. The test, done by the Washington State Patrol crime laboratory, extracted the DNA and led deputies to Adams.

At the time of the arrest, Adams was out on bail for second-degree burglary and two charges of possession of methamphetamine. He had meth on him during the arrest, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Adams was booked into Kitsap County Jail on $50,000 bail for first-degree burglary and possession of methamphetamine.
