POULSBO — After several years, the Poulsbo Parks and Recreation Department has finalized the addition of 26.25 acres to Fish Park.

“Now the real work begins,” parks director Mary McCluskey said. The City Council approved the expansion at Wednesday’s meeting.

The city acquired the acreage in many parcels, most of which were donated. A state grant in 2002 bought 13.36 acres; 7.43 acres was donated by the Great Peninsula Conservancy in 2008; .73 acres donated earlier this year from the NWI Trust; and 4.73 acres recently donated by Ed and Ruby Lord (no relation to Councilwoman Connie Lord). Fish Park currently has 20.73 acres.

Although the project totals $947,462, the city is only funding $11,150 from the park department reserves, which had been approved in August. The remaining funding for the park came through grants, donations and community volunteers.

“It’s exciting but only because of the support we’ve had over the last nine years,” McCluskey said. Several residents made up a steering committee to assist the department in expanding the urban park.

Bond Road runs through the Lord property that has been donated, which the city will work around when developing all the property into the park. McCluskey said they plan to add pathways, a stairwalk, view point, benches, native landscaping and a small parking area.
