The Downtown Bremerton library was closed today due to excessive interior heat and is expected to be closed until at least July 31.
Susan Whitford, director of technology and facilities for Kitsap Regional Library, said the building does not have an air conditioning system so interior temperatures have been very high, reaching 88 degrees yesterday and hitting 84 degrees by 9 a.m. this morning.
Library patrons are being asked to go to the Sylvan Way branch at 1301 Sylvan Way.
Whitford said KRL will measure the temperature on July 31, and if it is within reason, the library will reopen, but it will remain closed until temperatures return to a more comfortable level.
With the National Weather Service having extended the “excessive heat warning” until 6 p.m., July 31, the library could remain closed for the remainder of July.
