Before you leave home for a holiday party, think about how everyone can get home safely. Don’t let a DUI arrest, or something worse, ruin your holidays. With a simple plan, your holidays can be merry, and our roadways will be safe. For the past 22 years, law enforcement agencies throughout Washington State have conducted “Night of 1,000 Stars” impaired driving emphasis patrols, with each star symbolizing the badge worn by an on-duty law enforcement officer. This year’s “Stars” patrol is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14, in Kitsap County and across the state. The Kitsap County Traffic Safety Task Force will be dedicating this patrol to Washington State Patrol Trooper Tony Radulescu, for his efforts in making our highways safe. Trooper Tony participated in many events throughout the county, such as mock crash assemblies and speaking to schools, military and community groups. Trooper Radulescu was killed Feb. 23 during a traffic stop in the Gorst area of South Kitsap.“We are extremely proud of Trooper Tony Radulescu for his great contributions toward public safety. Tony believed, as the Washington State Patrol believes, that one person can make a difference in saving lives. He believed it and he exhibited his commitment to that belief through his dedication and work effort every day. It is a fitting tribute and we are especially honored that Tony will be recognized for his great work and sacrifice, by the community in which believed and served so proudly,” said Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste.During the 2011 patrol, 259 drivers were contacted, resulting in 15 alcohol arrests. It’s very simple: if you’re going to drink, don’t drive, and if you’re going to drive, don’t drink because one life lost is one too many. Have a designated driver, use a taxi, stay overnight, take the car keys of impaired friends and arrange a safe ride home for them, and if you see an impaired driver, call 9-1-1.Participating agencies include the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington State Patrol, and the Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Port Orchard and Poulsbo Police Departments.“Night of 1,000 Stars” and The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement patrols are funded by a special federal grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
