Slippery roads and black ice on the evening of Dec. 28 sent cars sliding all over North End’s major thoroughfares, if not into ditches, keeping Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews busy as they responded to a constant stream of weather-related accidents.

The crews were called to at least 30 collisions in the North End within a 24-hour period, starting around 7 p.m. Sunday evening, said NKF&R Spokesperson Michéle Laboda. Initially, crews were constantly responding to collision scenes until about 11 p.m.

Additional support came from Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue and the Puget Sound Federal Fire Department.

The majority of the collisions took place north of Mountain View Road, near the intersection of Bond and Gunderson, Bond and Ritter and Miller Bay Road.

“In almost every case, there were no injuries or minor injuries,” Laboda said.

Seatbelts, airbags and good luck prevented serious injuries for the most part, she added. Laboda said that a weather forecast similar to Sunday’s is set for this week and cautioned residents to stay at home. If residents need to travel, Laboda said they should wear seatbelts and drive with caution. She also noted that cars with four-wheel drive can slip and slide just as easily as those without it.
