PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap High School students Mason Eaglin and Gabrielle Lund are winners this year of Maynard Lundberg Scholarship awards.
Eaglin, a senior who has signed a letter to attend Duke University as a wrestler, won the South Puget Sound League championship in the 170-pound division. He placed second in the state wrestling championships this season.
Lund, a senior who will be attending Washington State University, won a Washington State Opportunity Scholarship to advance her STEM studies in college.
The Port Orchard Rotary Foundation awards ceremony took place June 5 at McCormick Woods Golf and Country Club.
The Maynard Lundberg Foundation, which presented the scholarships to Eaglin and Lund, was established 34 years ago to honor the legacy of Maynard Lundberg, who was an icon of Port Orchard, Bill Evans, the foundation’s director, said.
“Maynard was a past graduate of South Kitsap High School, a baseball and football coach, and an incredibly supportive member of the greater community,” Evans said.
The scholarships, which are awarded annually, were announced alongside scholarships presented by the Port Orchard Rotary Foundation to 13 graduating seniors. The value of the Rotary Foundation awards total in excess of $27,000, Evans said. The Lundberg scholarship value is $4,000 for each selected student.
The two foundations, in conjunction with the Phil Grey Foundation and the Danford Moore Foundation, awarded more than $35,000 in scholarship money to the students this year, Evans said.
