Students returned to the classroom this week, but memories of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newton, Conn., still linger in our minds.

While President Barak Obama wants to push new legislation banning assault rifles and high capacity clips, lawmakers from across the U.S. want to arm school administrators and teachers.

Last month, District 18 State Rep. Liz Pike (R-Camas) plans to create a new program that would allow teachers to volunteer to carry weapons at school.

The proposal, based off of the Federal Air Marshal Service Federal Flight Deck Officer program that allows pilots on commercial aircraft to voluntarily carry guns, would have teachers bring guns into classrooms and wear them on a belt or a holster.

Pike’s proposal would ensure safety to students, faculty, and staff in schools while creating a new impression that schools are not ‘gun-free’ zones.

Alabama State Rep. Kerry Rich (R-Albertville) said he wants to provide a legal pathway for to school administrators and teachers to carry guns to keep schools safe.

Rich is planning to pre-file a bill for the state House of Representatives to consider when it goes into session in February.

Under Rich’s plan, the bill would authorize a school system superintendent and board of education to identify and approve potential administrators and teachers to carry guns.

Texas State Rep. Debbie Riddle announced her intent to introduce a bill allowing teachers with concealed handgun licenses to bring guns to school.

Texas law bans guns in schools unless the school has given written authorization. Arizona and six other states have similar laws with exceptions for people who have licenses to carry concealed weapons.

Would allowing guns in schools have stopped Connecticut elementary school shooting? We really don’t know. Maybe it would have decreased the number of people killed, maybe not.

We can’t predict who, or when or where a shooting will take place. Who would have ever thought there would be a shooting at the West Nickel Mines Amish School in 2006.

We’re just part of a society who has been desensitized by violence projected in movies and video games.

If we outlaw guns, then do we banish them from movies and video games, also.

Guns will be around, whether we outlaw them or not. The bad guys will always find a way to purchase firearms, while the good guys standby helplessly.
