Editorial-Will Kingston’s show still go on?

Poulsbo did it for years. Last-minute pleading, outright begging, numerous fund-raisers and calls for community support.

Poulsbo did it for years. Last-minute pleading, outright begging, numerous fund-raisers and calls for community support. Then Fireworks on the Fjord organizer Mary Graves got smart and saved herself and others countless hours of hassle with a single word — sponsorship.

As far as North Kitsap goes, this is a relatively new concept, a few primary well-to-do companies footing the bill for everything from prizes and eating contest food to the big booms. But as far as Kingston goes, it’s an idea whose time has certainly come.

For several years now, the Little City by the Sea’s Fourth of July fireworks show has faced an uncertain future, more often than not right until the eleventh hour. Each time, the community has answered the call, eating more pancakes than humanly possible or stepping up to the plate with donations.

This outpouring of support has been amazing and if folks think it has to end if Kingston ropes a title sponsor or two, we’re inclined to disagree. Folks are going to support the 4th of July in North Kitsap’s patriotic village no matter what happens. We just feel it would be easier for the whole if a few businesses agreed to fill a large portion of the void each year. That way, fund-raisers for the 2004 event will have less strain on them and Kitsap County residents will be assured that one of the best shows here continues.

It’s a win-win. Don’t think so?

Just ask Mary.
