The deadline is past and 114 people signed up as candidates in the upcoming elections in the 26th Legislative District and throughout Kitsap County.

District 26 State Rep. Jan Angel (R-Port Orchard) will challenge Sen. Nathan Schlicher (D-Gig Harbor) for the one-year unexpired term of the 26th Legislative District senate seat.

Democrats appointed Schlicher earlier this year to fill the seat left vacant by Derek Kilmer, who was elected to represent the 6th Congressional District.

Angel is a three-term state representative and former two-term Kitsap County commissioner. This is Schlicher’s first time holding a political office.

There will be an August primary election for the Port Orchard City Council At-Large seat with three candidates who filed. Councilman At-Large Jerry

Childs filed for re-election to the two-year post, along with newcomers Eric Gonnason and Jeff Braden — both of whom filed late Friday.

According to the Kitsap County Auditor’s Office Election Division, races with three or more candidates will face each other in the Aug. 6 primary. The top two finishers will advance to the Nov. 5 general election.

Two candidates filed for the Position 2 post on the Port Orchard City Council. Challengers Bek Ashby and Kim Punt will look to fill the seat being vacated by Carolyn Powers, who announced she is retiring after 26 years on the council. It is a four-year term.

Council members Rob Putaansuu and Fred Chang filed to seek re-election to their respective Pos. 3 and 6 seats, which are four-year terms.

For the South Kitsap School District School Board, Rebecca Diehl filed for the District 4 director’s seat held by Kathryn Simpson, who is not seeking re-election.

Incumbent Christopher Lemke filed to retain his District 3 seat, but will be challenged by Jeff Larkin.

Port of Bremerton Commissioner Larry Stoke filed for re-election to his District 2 seat — a six-year term.

For the Port of Manchester, incumbent Commissioner Steven Pederson filed for his Pos. 3 seat, while another incumbent, James Strode, filed for his Pos. 1 commissioner’s seat on the Manchester Water District.

David Kimble filed to run against Strode, but withdrew as a candidate on May 20.

For South Kitsap Fire and Rescue, incumbents D.W. “Dusty’ Wiley and Paul Golnik, filed for re-election to their Pos. 2 and 5 commissioners’ seat, respectively.

James Jay Hart and Kevin P. Long have filed to run against incumbent Jennie Screws, who is seeking to retain her Pos. 1 commissioner for the West Sound Utility District. They will face each other in the Aug. 6 primary.

Commissioner Rob Reid filed for re-election for his District 1 seat for the Port of Waterman.

Ballots for the Aug. 6 primary will be mailed out between July 17-19.
