Election spotlight on Hansville Oct. 5 as candidates visit for forum (and pie)

Hansville’s candidate forums are always a big deal. Capacity crowds fill the community center to hear those who want to represent the public in various offices. The homemade pie and coffee probably don’t hurt.

HANSVILLE — Hansville’s candidate forums are always a big deal. Capacity crowds fill the community center to hear those who want to represent the public in various offices.

The homemade pie and coffee probably don’t hurt.

Eleven candidates and representatives for the governor candidates have committed for the Meet the Candidates Night Oct. 5, 6:30 p.m., at the Greater Hansville Community Center.

“On Aug. 22, I sent invitations to the two top winners in several races to attend our event,” emailed Lois Lee, organizer of this year’s event. “Candidates [had] until Sept. 4 to respond.”

Here’s who’s committed.

— Governor: Christine Rolfes will read a statement for Jay Inslee. Ed Wolfe will read a statement for Rob McKenna.
— 6th District Congress: Bill Driscoll, Derek Kilmer.
— District 23 state Senate: Christine Rolfes. (Her opponent, Bret Treadwell, is on the ballot but dropped out of the race before the primary.)
— District 23 state representative, Position 1: Sherry Appleton, Tony Stephens.
— District 23 state representative, Position 2: Drew Hansen, Capt. James Olsen.
— Kitsap County Commissioner, District 1: Rob Gelder, Chris Tibbs.
— Kitsap County Commissioner, District 2: Charlotte Garrido, Linda Simpson.

Here’s how the forum will work. Catherine Ahl of the League of Women Voters will secure audience questions on index cards and give them to the moderator, Fred Nelson, to ask the candidates. Jo Nelson will time candidates’ responses. Participants may not record the event.

The forum begins at 7 p.m. “We always serve homemade pie and coffee before the event [at 6:30 p.m.],” Lee reported.
