A 60-year-old South Kitsap man was arrested last week for allegedly pointing a shotgun at one of his sons after arguing over whether he could keep the den door open while smoking, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the incident report, the suspect’s wife called 911 around 10 p.m. Dec. 28, stating that her husband was arguing with their 31-year-old son and had pulled out a shotgun.

While deputies were dispatched to the house on the 9000 block of Wyvern Drive, the CenCom operator spoke with the suspect, who reportedly sounded very intoxicated, but said that he had since put the gun away.

When deputies arrived, they found a total of six people in the house, including the suspect, who was seated in the den nursing a gash on his head with several empty beer cans at his feet.

When deputies asked what the suspect what happened, he reportedly could hardly talk for slurring and did not remember much about the incident other than he was arguing with his son.

Later, the deputies were able to determine that the suspect had been in the den smoking and drinking much of the day. Several times, he said, his son came over and closed the doors between the den and the rest of the house because the smoke was bothering him.

The suspect, however, said he wanted to keep the door open so warm air could come inside the den and that his son was very “rude and disrespectful.” He then reportedly “freely admitted” to the deputy that he had gotten his 12-gauge shotgun and pointed the loaded weapon at his son, telling him to leave the door open.

The suspect then said he unloaded the weapon, put it away, then got into a physical altercation with his son, during which he apparently injured his head. His son later admitted that he elbowed his father in the head.

The father was then booked into Kitsap County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree, and held initially under $50,000 bail.
