Applications are being accepted for the second annual Seagull Splat 5K Run/Walk on May 24, at the Comfort Inn in Port Orchard, hosted by the Fathoms o’ Fun Festival.
The run — scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. — is part of the 2015 Kitsap Harbor Festival on May 23-25.
Fathoms chair Sharron King said that Fathoms and the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce are jointly participating in the Harbor Festival Weekend. Activities are planned for Port Orchard and Bremerton.
“We’re hoping to bring lots of folks to town,” she said. “You can take the ferry back and forth to check out everything going on.”
King said her group is anticipating doubling or tripling the number of race participants this year.
“We are constantly hearing good things like, ‘Oh, I heard that was so fun last year and I want to run in it this year.’ If everyone who says that turns out, we will be successful,” she said. “It is really a ‘family friendly’ event.”
The 5-kilometer run will begin at the west end of the Comfort Inn on Bay Street. There will be a race map in the runner’s packet or they can obtain one at registration. The course runs from Bay Street, loops through West Bay Center, continues along Beach Drive to Olney at the turnaround, runs the length and back of the Annapolis Dock and finishes at the Port Orchard Marina Waterfront Park.
Along the way, there are “splat stations” for runners and walkers to pass through.
More than 70 runners participated in the first year.
Pre-registration is due by May 16 in order to guarantee each participant a T-shirt. Registration fees range between $20 and $30. There is a $30 charge for civilians who pre-registered and it will include a T-shirt and $25 without one.
Groups of five or more who pre-register will have a $25 fee with the shirt and $20 without. Veterans and military participants will pay the same fee as the group.
There is a $30 fee for the day of the race without a shirt.
The run will include a 14-and under division, 15-18, 19-29, 20-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older for male and females.
There is a $5 fee for children, ages 3-9, for the Kids Dash and each participant receives a finisher toy, but no shirt.
There will be two races — for ages 3-5 and 6-9.
The Kids Dash is set for 11 a.m.
Awards will be presented to the first-place finisher in each division, while the next three placers will receive a ribbon. The awards ceremony is planned for 11:30 a.m.
