Fathoms O’ Fun’s Royal Court selection is underway this year with the scholarship competition taking place March 5 at Christian Life Center in Port Orchard.

The theme of the pageant this year is “You’ve Got To Dream It To Be It.”

As part of the pageant competition, it will have a game show twist featuring television programs such as “The Price Is Right,” “Deal or No Deal” and “Dancing With The Stars.”

Tickets are on sale for the show, which starts at 5 p.m. Prices are $10 for adults and $6 for students.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or from one of the pageant contestants.

Five junior and six senior contestants are competing this year, according to Fathoms O’ Fun Royal Court coordinator Helene Jensen. They are seventh- through 12th-grade students, and two of them are boys, Jensen said.

Each contestant is required to write a 500-word essay on a topic they’re passionate about.

The essays will be judged by Port Orchard author Debbie Macomber. They then will deliver topic speeches to several service organization audiences.

Contestants also will perform a talent during the competition and answer impromptu questions on stage.

So why such a rigorous competition? Johnson said poise and a well-rounded personality are essential to the role as a Royal Court member.

“These individuals are asked for an entire year to represent the Port Orchard community by attending anything from parades, ribbing-cutting ceremonies and community clean-ups,” Jensen said.

“They’ll do anything from wearing formal attire to pulling up their sleeves and digging in the dirt.”

Three junior princesses, two senior princesses and a queen will be chosen at the conclusion of the competition. A duchess will be crowned from the current royalty court and serve as a mentor for the new court.

Some of the local businesses sponsoring the Royal Court activities this year include Port Orchard Lions Club, Air Masters, Debbie Macomber, Stokes Auction, Bruce Titus Ford, Rill Chapel, Les Schwab Tires, WestBay Auto, Rings & Things, Gazebo Florist, Flowers To Go, Charmaine’s Gardengate Flowers & Gifts and West Sound Tech.
