PORT ORCHARD — For South Kitsap School District students and staff, snow closures and delays during the weeks of Feb. 4-15 could have meant that makeup days would prolong classes nearly to the end of June.
Instead, the last day of classes will be June 18 — two days later than originally scheduled.
Thanks to Gov. Inslee’s state of emergency proclamation during the week of Feb. 11-15, South Kitsap was granted four waiver days by the Office of State Public Instruction. Washington state school districts normally are required to provide 1,027 hours of instruction in a school year.
With the confluence of missed days and hours — and the OSPI waiver — district administrators and South Kitsap Public Education Association leaders met last week to review options for making up lost time.
As a result, the collective leaders agreed to add June 17 and 18 as makeup days. June 18 — to be a half-day of classes — will conclude the school year, administrators said.
Two days in May — the 22nd and 29th — will have regular start times and no late-start collaborations, as previously scheduled.
Graduation ceremonies will remain as previously planned. South Kitsap High School graduation will take place Tuesday, June 11, at the Tacoma Dome. One day earlier — Monday, June 10 — Explorer Academy will have its commencement ceremony. And on Monday, June 3, Discovery High School’s graduates will take part in commencement exercises at Chapel Hill Church.
Also scheduled: on Thursday, March 28, students in the district won’t be attending classes. They will instead participate in day-long Crisis Reality training.
