Crews sent to help douse wildfires

For the second time in a week, local firefighters and wildfire equipment were sent east of the Cascade Mountains to assist with growing wildfires.

The first team was sent to the 3,000-acre Mud Lake fire near Naches Aug. 12.

The second team, dispatched on Aug. 14, was sent to the Dryden/Fischer fire near Leavenworth.

The strike teams were headed by Poulsbo Fire Department Lieutenant Ed Wright and included crews and brush trucks and water tenders from Poulsbo Fire, North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Mason County Fire District 2 and Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue. This is the fourth time this summer local firefighters and equipment have been dispatched to help in Eastern Washington.

While strike team crews headed east Saturday night, NKF&R crews were dispatched to a 50-foot by 60-foot blaze in the woods west of Miller Bay Road.

Two hours, nearly 400 feet of hoseline and 3,500 gallons of water later, the fire was extinguished. Two teens admitted to building a campfire in the vicinity earlier in the day and said they thought they had put it out.

The county wide burn ban is still in effect and fire officials said unattended or improperly extinguished outdoor fires are the most common cause of wildland and brush fires.

Pipe bomb found near Rude Road

POULSBO — Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a Rude Road residence Aug. 12 after a woman brought what looked like a pipe bomb back to her home after she went on a morning walk.

The woman’s husband called deputies to come and pick up the device, which was described as a five- to six-inch-long pipe wrapped in wire with a fuse.

The husband also reported he had heard a very loud explosion the night before, however, deputies were unable to link the found device to the explosion. When deputies retrieved the device, it was determined it was not active.

No suspects have been identified.

If any mechanism like this is found, residents are advised not to disturb the item and immediately contact law enforcement officials, said KCSO Deputy and spokesman Scott Wilson.
