SUQUAMISH — A fast-spreading fire claimed a home off State Route 305 near George Lane Thursday afternoon.
Neighbors reported the blaze at about 3:30 p.m., after seeing flames in the window of the mobile home. The home’s only resident, a 54-year-old man, was at a nearby store when he was alerted to the fire, Poulsbo Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Matson said.
The man returned to the scene and was later transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition isn’t yet known, Matson said.
Clint Corey, who lives next door to the home, said he and his wife smelled smoke as they were preparing a meal. They went outside to investigate and saw flames inside their neighbor’s mobile home.
The fire spread fast, Corey said.
“There was nothing we could do,” he said. “By the time we figured out it was on fire it was all over.”
Corey said he disconnected propane cans and moved his truck and motorcycle away from the burning home.
“I couldn’t believe how fast it happened,” Corey said.
Matson said there was ammunition reportedly stored in the home but no major explosions occurred. Fire crews extinguished the flames at about 4:30 p.m.
The fire response slowed traffic on both directions of State Route 305 for several hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
