A midday fire destroyed a home in the area of East Raintree and Moon Beam Court on Monday, Jan. 14.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue reported the blaze happened about 12:37 p.m. When the first engine and duty chief arrived at the scene, fire had consumed more than half of the structure.

The homeowner arrived and had to be restrained from entering the burning home. She believed her adult daughter, who lives with her, may have been in the home because her vehicle was in the driveway. Later, the homeowner discovered her daughter was safe and with friends.

Two dogs and five puppies, believed to be in the home, were unaccounted for.

Fire crews began defensive operations and extinguished the blaze from outside the home.

The house was declared a total loss and 90 percent of the content was lost. The family requested the fire department search a bedroom for a family heirloom baby crib. It was found with minimal smoke and water damage.

Fire department chaplains responded and offered assistance to the family. Fire crews remained on the scene for several hours putting out hot spots and setting up a safety collapse zone around the home.

A total of five engines, two aid units, a medic unit and four tenders responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation by the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office.

“In the end, no one was injured and the family was grateful to have everyone safe and accounted for,” said SKFR Battalion Chief Ron Powers.
