In what has become an all-too familiar pattern, Harrison Medical Center has announced that as of Sept. 1, it will no longer accept First Choice Health insurance.

The two sides have been negotiating reimbursement terms for more than a year. For the time being, they’re at an impasse.

“Our reimbursement levels at Harrison, we feel, are much too high,” said Bob Hinman, vice president of network management at First Choice.

However, the two sides will likely continue negotiating.

“We would like to continue to have dialogue,” Hinman said. “If we could come to terms that would be great.”

For its part, CHI Franciscan Health System, which owns Harrison, expects a deal to be made before September.

“We are in active contract discussions with First Choice Health and anticipate to have a resolution before the Sept. 1 deadline,” said Shawn Jennison, Franciscan’s director of marketing and communications.

In August 2014, Regence BlueShield ended its contract with Franciscan after failing to agree on reimbursement terms. The two sides agreed to a new contract in February.

After Sept. 1, First Choice customers will only be able to use Harrison Hospital in emergencies, otherwise they’ll need to use in-network hospitals in Tacoma, Gig Harbor or Port Townsend.
