NORTH KITSAP — Today was the first day of school for students in the North Kitsap School District. But it was a short return: School ended at noon.
The district has six half-day school furloughs — five after today — for the 2011-12 year.
Furlough days were created as a way to recover from a 1.9 percent loss in state funding for teacher salaries The furlough days are expected to save the district $325,000 in certificated salaries and $75,000 in classified salaries. The district and North Kitsap Education Association mutually agreed upon the cost-saving method.
Along with the reductions in state funding for salaries, the district has a general fund of $63,973,180 for this year, down from $65,861,470 in 2010-11. The general fund is financed by local, county, state and federal sources. It pays for school operations such as programs, salaries and benefits, food services, maintenance, student transportation, printing and data processing. Other reductions this year include staffing cuts which equal 28 full-time equivalent positions.
The other five furlough days are: Sept. 16, Nov. 23, Dec. 16, Feb. 17 and April 27.
Another change to the district schedule is the 50-minute early release beginning Sept. 14 and continuing every Wednesday this year. The early release is an attempt to give teachers more opportunities to collaborate with each other in professional learning communities.

Kingston Middle School
Regular schedule: 8:10 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
Wednesday early release schedule: 8:10-1:50 p.m.

Regular schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
