POULSBO — For the second year in a row, the Miss Poulsbo Organization will have two crowns up for grabs at an April 10 pageant.
But one of them will be a golden experience for the Poulsbo Community.
The Miss Poulsbo Pageant turns 50 this year and to celebrate, organizers are having a 1950’s, sock-hop-inspired pageant that they’re hoping will be the gala event of the season. Thirteen young women will take the stage at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center April 10 to vie for the Miss Poulsbo and Miss Kitsap crowns.
Five Poulsbo women are competing for the Miss Poulsbo title, while eight competitors from Kitsap County at large will compete for Miss Kitsap. The majority of Miss Kitsap competitors this year come from the Bremerton area.
Both the titleholders chosen at the upcoming event will advance to the Miss Washington Pageant, from which the winner moves on to the Miss America Pageant.
Besides the chance to advance on to larger competition levels, the Miss Poulsbo/Miss Kitsap Pageant is also an opportunity for young women to earn scholarships and awards. The 2003 Miss Poulsbo and Miss Kitsap will each receive $5,000, first runners-up in both categories will be awarded $1,000 and all non-finalists will be get $300.
There will also be other scholarships and awards up for grabs, adding up to about $18,200 that will be distributed among the contestants.
The 2004 Miss Poulsbo/Miss Kitsap Pageant begins at 5 p.m. April 10 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or at Nilsen Appliance Centers in Poulsbo and Silverdale and at Dahlquist’s Fine Jewelry in Poulsbo Village.

Miss Poulsbo Contestants:
•Melissa Smith of Suquamish, daughter of Lyle and Melody Smith. Smith, 19, is a 2003 North Kitsap High School graduate who hopes to study early childhood education at Olympic College.
Smith will perform a contemporary jazz vocal of Natalie Cole’s “L-O-V-E” as her talent. She has chosen “CPR education” as her platform.
She is sponsored by Fritz Jorg of State Farm Insurance.
•Kelsey Erickson of Poulsbo, daughter of Jon and Debbie Mathews. Erickson, 17, is a North Kitsap High School senior who plans to study journalism or broadcasting at Washington State University.
Erickson will give a jazz vocal performance of Natalie Cole’s “Almost Like Being in Love” for her talent presentation. She has chosen “teen suicide prevention through community involvement” as her platform.
She is sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank.
•Tamara Coultas of Poulsbo, daughter of Robert Coultas. Coultas, 19, is a 2003 North Kitsap High School graduate studying business and communication at the University of Washington.
Coultas will perform a country vocal performance of Wynona Judd’s “When You Hit Rock Bottom” for her talent. She has chosen “youth suicide prevention and awareness” as her platform.
She is sponsored by ReMax Real Estate and Eye & Contact Optical Clinic.
•Bevin Duncan of Suquamish, daughter of Brady Duncan and Beatrice Idris-Duncan. Duncan, 17, is North Kitsap High School senior who hopes to study psychology at the University of Washington.
Duncan will perform a high energy dance remix as her talent. She has chosen “dating violence awareness” as her platform.
She is sponsored by Raven Electric and Nursery, Corey Sign Company and Poulsbo Dairy Queen.
•Canon Henness of Kingston, daughter of James and Lija Henness and Tim and Kathleen Wright. Henness, 17, is a North Kitsap High School senior who hopes to study criminal justice and theater at an undetermined university.
Henness will perform a contemporary vocal performance of Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This” as her talent. She has chosen “senior citizen appreciation” as her platform.
She is sponsored by Armstrong Fitness and Tim Ryan Construction.
Miss Kitsap Contestants:
•Elizabeth Montoya, 18, of Seattle, daughter of Molly Montoya, is a Seattle University freshman. Her platform is “cultural diversity” and her talent presentation will be a hip-hop dance to “Party to Damajas” by Wyclef Jean and Missy Elliot. She is sponsored by Jean Locke of John L. Scott and Heath Nichols of Golf Savings Mortgage.
•Mallory Morrison, 18, of Bremerton, daughter of Michael Morrison and Carlene Balshuseman, a Bremerton High School senior. Her platform is “drug awareness for teens” and her talent presentation will be a classical ballet performance of “Juliet at the Ball” from “Romeo and Juliet.” She is sponsored by Hudson Photographic Artistry and Economy Sheet Metal and Heating, Inc.
•Shere Flint, 17, of Seabeck, daughter of Glenn and Joyce Flint, a senior at Klahowya Secondary School. Her platform Is “tobacco awareness” and her talent presentation will be an American Sign Language interpretation of Mariah Carey’s “Hero.”
•Kathryn Hightower, 17, of Bremerton, daughter of Arline Curtis, a senior at Klahowya Secondary School. Her platform is “blood and platelet donation: the priceless gift” and her talent presentation will be a contemporary pointe dance to Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing.” She is sponsored by Irene’s School of Dance and American Marine Bank.
•Nicole Carey, 17, of Seabeck, daughter of James and Sally Carey, a senior at Klahowya Secondary School. Her platform is “Youth Volunteer Corps: building better leaders” and her talent presentation will be a marimba solo of “Eatude in C Major.” She is sponsored by All Phazes Construction and Dana Soyat of Windemere Real Estate.
•Amy Stadshaug, 19, of Bremerton, daughter of Mark and Susan Stadshaug, a University of Washington freshman. Her platform is “Habitat for Humanity” and her talent presentation will be a contemporary pointe dance to “We’re Dancing” from “Center Stage.” She is sponsored by Irene’s School of Dance and Kitsap Mustang Club.
•Rachelle Solier, 17, of Bremerton, daughter of Victor and Michelle Solier, a senior at Klahowya Secondary School. Her platform is “Generations United” and her talent presentation will be a Spanish pop vocal of “Eres Tu Touch the Wind” She is sponsored by Master Solier’s Tae Kwon Do and The Cat’s Meow.
•Emerald Mansfield, 19, of Bremerton, daughter of Rodney and Marina Mansfield, a 2003 Olympic College graduate. Her platform is “renewing our resources through conservation” and her talent presentation will be a classic ballet performance of “Waltz from Les Sylphides” by Fredric Chopin. She is sponsored by Port of Bremerton commissioner Bill Mahan, Chrey’s Fine Jewelry and Sylvan Chiropractic.
