Food drive nets 1,206 pounds | Kingston Kiwanis

The pre-Apple Cup Food Drive was a success, with many generous community members making sure our local food banks are full as possible. Our Kiwanis Club members, Key Club members and some Kingston High School Honor Society members were all in football colors supporting the Cougs or the Huskies, and collecting food outside Albertsons and the Food Market.

At Albertsons, 1,206 pounds of food was collected for ShareNet, and the Coug fans brought in the larger part of that haul.

Of course, the reverse was true at the Food Market — nine large carts of food with Husky fans donating the larger amount there. By our count, it should be close contest.

It was very cold and blustery so Hershey Hugs and Kisses sprinkled the tables at the Kiwanis meeting as a special thank you — rumor has it that they magically appeared at the Key Club meeting too.

Former president Pat Bennett-Forman went to the Food to Go meeting at ShareNet with other service organizations in a joint effort to provide food for kids in need without overlap or omission and reinventing the wheel. Rotarian Clint Boxman is taking the lead on coordinating our services to provide the help needed in our community to make it the very best it can be for all of us.

The Kiwanis and Key Club had their annual potluck together Dec. 3.  The Key Club requested that all attendees come costumed as their favorite Disney character. It was great fun and an opportunity for us to really get to know each other better. These teenagers sure know how to make things interesting.

On Dec. 5, we had our annual Santa Workshop with Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elves (Key Club members) and plenty of hot drinks and other goodies. This is a good time to have a picture taken with Santa and participate in all the Kingston festivities. The Kingston Cove Yacht Club donates the clubhouse for our workshop.

Our annual holiday dinner was hosted by past president Dick and past treasurer Judy Osborn’s home and, as usual, it was a gala affair.

As the New Year is upon us, we have much to be thankful for. Living in the greater Kingston area is one of those gifts and I hope 2016 will be as fruitful as 2015.

Jan. 10, we gather at the Kingston Westside Pizza at 7 a.m. and join a VIP tour on a bus with the North Kitsap School District Superintendent Patty Page. Working together, we can be sure we are helping to meet the needs of our community with our time, talents and money.

If you would like to be part of this great Kiwanis organization, please contact our president, Nancy Garing, 360-638-2780; or me, Bob Lee, at 360-509-9752 or go to our webpage. We meet each Thursday morning at 7 at Westside Pizza in beautiful downtown Kingston. Hope to see you there.
