The city of Port Orchard hopes to extend foot-ferry service to Bremerton on Sundays this summer.

“I think it’s a great way for tourists to experience both cities,” said Patty Lent, the mayor of Bremerton.

Leaders from the cities of Port Orchard and Bremerton and the Port of Bremerton are considering entering into a partnership to split the costs, expected to be between $19,305 and $8,775 total, depending on how many hours per Sunday the ferry runs.

The three agencies already pay for the foot ferry to run on seven Sundays per summer, during festivals.

Monday through Saturday, Kitsap Transit covers the expense.

Port Commissioner Larry Stokes said that he’s “deeply concerned” that Kitsap Transit could start abdicating more and more of their responsibility for the foot ferry, as the partnership takes it over.

“I would only support it if we had a sound agreement with Kitsap Transit that this wasn’t going to escalate,” he said. “If we start running the ferry from Bremerton to Port Orchard during the summer, Kitsap Transit is going to want it year round, then Sunday, then Saturday.”
