KINGSTON — There are many pie records to break and the Kingston Village Green Foundation will try to best one of them on Aug. 21 during Pie in the Park.
The sixth annual fundraiser at the Village Green Park begins at 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Village Green Community Center. Last year, more than $17,000 was raised.
Members of the foundation sent in an application to Guinness World Records so the foundation can officially compete for the record of most money spent on a single pie at auction.
“We are still hoping for a record,” Village Green Foundation Executive Director Daniel Johnson wrote in an email.
Though the foundation hadn’t received official documentation as of Aug. 19, the auction can be videotaped and used as proof of a record attempt. The world record for most money spent on a pie at auction is held by Jerry Mumma of Rich Hill, Missouri. Mumma purchased a peanut butter banana pie with a Hammond Pretzel crust for $3,100 on July 6, 2012. The pie was sold during Rich Hill’s pie contest and auction, a fundraiser for the town’s Fourth of July celebration, according to a 2012 story by the Los Angeles Times.
Can Kingston best that?
The most money spent on a pie at last year Pie in the Park was $2,850, according to Johnson. The pricey pie was a caramel turtle truffle pie.
A record for the most money spent on a single pie at auction would add to Kingston’s list of record holders. Ross McCurdy, co-owner of Oak Table Cafe, remains the record holder for most pancakes made in one hour by an individual. He made 1,092 on Aug. 13, 2013.
McCurdy set the record for the longest distance for a grape thrown and self-caught in the mouth in 2012. However, that record was broken by AJ Henderson on the set of “Guinness World Records Unleashed” in San Pedro, Calif., on July 11, 2013. Henderson threw the grape — and ran to catch it — 69 feet 6 inches.
Other pie records
There are plenty of other pie records, according to Guinness World Records. Here are a few:
- The most expensive meat pie was sold to the Fence Fate Inn in Lancashire, England. The pie sold for $14,260 in 2005.
- The longest line of pies is 1,477 apple pies, which was achieved in Lower Saxony, Germany in 2013.
- One of the largest pies was pumpkin. The pie weighed 3,699 pounds and was made in New Bremen, Ohio in 2010.
And, for those planning on entering the children’s pie-eating contest during the Village Green Fundraiser, the record for most apple pie eaten in 6 minutes is 9 pounds 8 ounces, according to competitiveeaters.com.
