SPELLING BEE SUCCESS
Celebrating its 13th year working with residents of Kitsap County in adult literacy, the Literacy Council of Kitsap (LCK) hosted its annual spelling bee and silent auction fundraiser at the Silverdale Beach Hotel May 7.
The event is the largest annual fundraiser for LCK. This year’s bee netted almost $13,000 for free assistance provided by instructors and volunteer tutors who work with their students building skills to get better jobs or higher education, earn GEDs, learn English as a second language, prepare for citizenship tests and become advocates for themselves and their families.
For more information on LCK or to volunteer as a tutor, call (360) 373-1539 or visit www.kitsapliteracy.org.
CELL PHONE RECYCLING
Kitsap Mall is currently collecting cell phones for recycling to help keep them out of the landfills.
A cell phone recycling center will be located at guest services through Thursday, June 4. The new program, in partnership with Sony and EMA, is part of Kitsap Mall’s ongoing focus on sustainability, which includes the Green GIVE Card, a special gift card in partnership with American Express that helps plant trees in U.S. forests with every purchase.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Group Health Cooperative is seeking hospice volunteers with weekday availability in Pierce, Kitsap and south King counties, especially in the areas of Bremerton, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Tacoma and Federal Way.
Hospice volunteers stay with patients in their homes, assist with errands and practical tasks, and offer emotional support to terminally ill patients and their families.
The next training session will be in Tacoma on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, June 2, 4, 9, 11, 16 and 18. Attendance at all of these dates is required. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application before May 20.
For more information, call Julia Casey at (253) 274-4635 or toll-free at (888) 781-3573.
