HISTORY DAY WINNERS
Fairview Junior High School students Lorie Cruz and Yoon Jung Kim competed in the Regional History Day contest at Olympic College March 23.
They received superior marks and competed in the state contest April 25 at the Green River Community College campus in Auburn.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT
The Silverdale Chamber of Commerce recently selected Kela McVicker, Central Kitsap High School class of 2009, for the Future Business Leader Career and Technical Education scholarship.
The purpose of the Chamber’s scholarship is to provide students who have excelled in the area of career and technical education with a monetary award to be used in pursuit of their continuing career and technical education goals.
McVicker took a variety of career and technical education classes, settling into the sports medicine program. It is her desire to pursue a career as a pediatric physical therapist. She will be attending Olympic College’s physical therapist assistant program in the fall.
FREE KARATE CLASS
UKO Karate is offering free summer karate classes in Silverdale and Port Orchard. The eight-week course will introduce students to beginning karate techniques and concepts and will act as a tryout for the limited number of student openings available at UKO. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed for the 32nd annual Viking Fest Road Race in Poulsbo.
The race starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 16. Volunteers are needed to help with the kids dashes, handing out ribbons and monitoring chutes at the finish line.

MILESTONE
Jennifer Balliet, a Curves of Bremerton member, was recently recognized for her completion of 1,000 workouts.
She has been a Curves of Bremerton member since 2003. She enjoys spending time with her grandchild and is involved with the Manette Neighborhood Coalition.
Curves’ exercise program consists of 30 minutes of exercise three times a week, during which participants work all major muscle groups and receive a cardio workout. It includes all five components of a complete exercise program: warm-up, strength training, cardio, cool down and stretching.
