MONTEREY, Calif. — Navy ensign Gerald Vineyard, son of retired Navy Capt. Michael and Lynn Vineyard of Bremerton, recently received his master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Vineyard’s graduation from the school, the only naval institution of its kind in the world, means he has been prepared through advanced professional education to provide intellectual leadership and sound judgement in defense matters. Vineyard joined the Navy in June 2004.
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. — Jeffrey Olson, a 2005 Olympic High School grad, recently graduated from Linfield College with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in biology. He was named outstanding senior exercise science student. His goal is to attend Mid-Western University in Arizona and enter the podiatric medicine program. He is a fifth-generation Kitsap County resident.
NEW BOARD OFFICERS
Jeanie Schulze of Silverdale has been re-elected chair of the Literacy Council of Kitsap’s Board of Directors.
Other officers for the 2009-10 program year include Terry Schroeder of Silverdale, vice chair; Dave Rubens of Silverdale, treasurer; and Doris Smith of Bremerton, secretary.
Schulze is a retired community relations director for the Central Kitsap School District. Schroeder is the coordinator for the Kitsap County Continuum of Care and a retired DSHS social worker. Rubens is the owner of Rubens Insurance in Silverdale and Smith is a retired educator.
James Saryerwinnie, retired from the United States Navy, was invited to join the board by unanimous approval this month. Continuing on the board are Stacey Ames, marketing specialist for Paladin Data Systems; Elizabeth Blandin of Bremerton, a teacher at Central Kitsap High School; Dan Bopp of Poulsbo, meat quality specialist at Safeway; Rebecca Cooper of Bremerton, community activist; Steve Dixon of Bremerton, attorney at law; Harry Guay of Silverdale, retired assistant superintendent of the Central Kitsap School District, interim superintendent of the Bremerton School District and a longtime member of Silverdale Rotary; Eun Joo Han Kim of Silverdale, volunteer tutor and former student; Estela Lopez of Port Orchard, volunteer for El Centro de la Familia; and Marilyn Moore of Bainbridge Island, volunteer Poulsbo GED Instructor for the Council.
The board bids farewell to Frank Spargo of Poulsbo, who served as chair of the board for three years as well as vice chair for the past two years. He has stepped down this month to become a Community Ambassador for Literacy.
The Literacy Council helps Kitsap adults ages 16 and older build their skills to get jobs or re-enter the workforce with services they often cannot get elsewhere, including: individualized GED preparation, English as a Second Language tutoring, citizenship preparation, family literacy for parents and tutoring in reading and other basic skills.

CELL PHONES NEEDED
YWCA of Kitsap County staff are asking community members to donate used cell phones for a cellular phone collection project.
Cell phones will be recycled through the Shelter Alliance for funding which will support YWCA programs: the ALIVE Shelter, ALIVE Legal Advocacy Program, ALIVE Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap Program, YWCA Family Outreach Program, Back-to-School Project and YWCA Kids KAMP.
Phones can be donated Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the YWCA Community Center, 905 Pacific Ave., Bremerton. For more information or if you are interested in having your business as a phone collection site, call the YWCA at (360) 479-0522.
DCD NOW USING POSTCARDS
Kitsap County Department of Community Development is now sending postcard notices for projects in unincorporated Kitsap County that require public notice.
In mid-2008, DCD began an evaluation of the methods used to print and mail notice documents. They found that using services provided by the U.S. Postal Service for full document mailings reduced costs. Since July 2008, more than $9,400 was saved using these services. This reduced mailing costs about 52 percent. The majority of these mailings were letters and multi-page documents. Extending the use of these services to postcard notification increases accessibility to project information, reduces the number calls and physical visits to DCD and can provide significant cost savings.
SENIOR CHECKS AVAILABLE
Senior Farmers Market checks are still available to income-eligible seniors, ages 60 or older.
The checks are available at the Chuckwagon Senior Nutrition office, 2817 Wheaton Way, No. 208, Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or at Aging and Long Term Care at the Givens Center in Port Orchard on Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call (360) 377-8511.
