NAME THAT OWL
The West Sound Wildlife Shelter is hosting a “Name the Owl Contest” and invites those of all ages to enter.
The winning name will be given to a barred owl, the newest addition to the shelter’s successful live-animal education program. The winner will receive a private one-on-one visit with the barred owl or a visit by the owl to a group specified by the winner, such as a classroom or civic group. Entries must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 15.
The unnamed barred owl came to the shelter in March 2007 with a broken coracoid, a bone in her breast. About 1 year old at the time, she was found starving and emaciated in a field in Port Orchard. Shelter staff are nearly certain she had been hit by a car and left injured and unable to feed herself for some time before she was brought to the shelter.
After spending considerable time in rehabilitation, it became clear that she would never be able to fly well enough to survive in the wild. At that point, by law, the shelter either had to euthanize the owl or place her in an education program.
To enter the “Name the Owl Contest,” contestants must fill out the shelter’s submission form. The form can be obtained on the shelter’s Web site at www.westsoundwildlife.org, by contacting Kol Medina at kol@westsoundwildlife.org or by calling (206) 855-9057. The winner will be announced by Sept. 25.
