MILITARY NEWS
GREAT LAKES, Ill. — Navy seaman recruit James Peace, son of Debra and stepson of Carleton Adams of Bremerton, and brother of Nathaniel Peace of Fort Bliss, Texas, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Peace completed training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.
Peace is a 2006 graduate of Central Kitsap High School.
SAN DIEGO — Jamie Minks of Seabeck completed U.S. Marine Corps basic training on Aug. 22 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. He will report to Camp Pendelton for advanced infantry training.

TACOMA — Jennifer Shuttleworth of Silverdale earned bachelor’s degrees in history and religion in spring 2008. She studied abroad in England in January 2006 and in Germany in January 2008. A graduate of Central Kitsap High School, she is the daughter of John and Cindy Shuttleworth of Silverdale. She also was named to the dean’s list.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — David Richardson of Silverdale received the Roy and Elnora Danley Presidential Scholar Scholarship from the University of North Dakota (UND) for the 2008-09 academic year. Richardson, son of Robert and Joann Richardson, was home schooled and plans to attend UND in the fall.
The Presidential Scholar-ship is awarded to high school seniors who rank among the top half of 1 percent of entering college students in the nation, based upon high school grades and ACT or SAT test results.
NAME THAT OWL
The West Sound Wildlife Shelter is hosting a “Name the Owl Contest” and invites those of all ages to enter.
The winning name will be given to a barred owl, the newest addition to the shelter’s successful live-animal education program. The winner will receive a private one-on-one visit with the barred owl or a visit by the owl to a group specified by the winner, such as a classroom or civic group. Entries must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 15.
The unnamed barred owl came to the shelter in March 2007 with a broken coracoid, a bone in her breast. About 1 year old at the time, she was found starving and emaciated in a field in Port Orchard. Shelter staff are nearly certain she had been hit by a car and left injured and unable to feed herself for some time before she was brought to the shelter.
After spending considerable time in rehabilitation, it became clear that she would never be able to fly well enough to survive in the wild. At that point, by law, the shelter either had to euthanize the owl or place her in an education program.
To enter the “Name the Owl Contest,” contestants must fill out the shelter’s submission form. The winner will be announced by Sept. 25.
REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED

COMMITTEE CHAIRS SELECTED
United Way of Kitsap County has named Terry Peterson, president and CEO of Westsound Bank, and Charleen Burnette of the city of Bremerton as the 2008 annual campaign chairs.
Peterson will serve as the community chair and Burnette will serve as board chair.

MILITARY FALL FESTIVAL
The Military Affairs Committees of the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce is hosting its annual Military Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Pavilion at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds and Events Center. The event is open to anyone with a military ID card; active duty, reserve, retired and dependents; admission is free. Vendor/exhibitor registrations are now being accepted.
The event provides an opportunity for service members and their families to visit vendors representing more than 150 area businesses, social service organizations and service groups. A number of military related services, including Tri-Care and Moral-Welfare-and Recreation (MWR) exhibitors also will be on hand.
