POULSBO — Years ago, Angela Wilkinson set out to change the world and ended up changing her life.
As a member of Bainbridge Island group Kids First, Poulsbo resident Wilkinson and husband Steve were part of a mission to Vietnam to help children effected by land mines and Agent Orange. Wilkinson said she remembers feeling drawn to the beautiful artwork of the region and decided to start importing Vietnamese pots to the North Kitsap area.
That import business led her to open Mor-In Store, one of downtown Poulsbo’s newest businesses. The store carries an eclectic mix of ceramic gardening pots from artists around the world, which Wilkinson hopes will inspire locals as much as they inspire her.
“I wanted people to be able to go shopping and say, ‘This is a beautiful pot, I want to take it home,’” she explained of her store’s concept.
Ranging from just inches to several feet tall, Mor-In Store’s pots come from places like Vietnam, England, Greece, China and Thailand. And since Wilkinson imports all of the store’s pots directly, she said there is no middleman and therefore none of the mark ups some stores make on their merchandise. In fact, the whole operation is so down to earth that Steve Wilkinson is the man-power behind getting the store’s merchandise from their warehouse space on Bainbridge Island to Poulsbo.
Even so, Wilkinson said she didn’t want her bargain basement prices to overshadow the feel of the store. She painted the walls of the former location of Caron’s a rich suede color and piled the multi-colored pots around the store like a treasure trove of jewels awaiting discovery.
“I wanted it to feel elegant,” Wilkinson said of the boutique’s luxurious feel.
And the look of each pot is unique: a creamy white European pot that harkens to Provincial countryside gardens; a modern Greek pot featuring the classic combination of bright white matte glaze over blazing terra cotta lined with black silhouettes; and a cool, green high gloss Vietnamese pot that looks like a piece of freshly-cut bamboo.
“They all have slight differences in style and glazing processes,” explained Wilkinson’s sister Liz Mastrorocco who also works at the store. “This way it’s a broader range to basically fit any decor.”
Besides unique decorative pots, Mor-In Store also offers a wide range of other items aimed toward garden-minded folks.
Bulbs, a variety of heirloom-quality seeds kits and natural remedies for garden problems like moles and deer are featured prominently. She also carries gardening smocks, as well as several varieties of natural soaps, lotions and even shampoos aimed at gardeners.
“It seems like people in Poulsbo are very garden and plant conscious,” Mastrorocco said of why the pair figured the store would likely take root in Little Norway.
Wilkinson said since she opened her store just after the main gardening season ended, she decided to branch out and offer gift items that would be great ideas for holiday gifts, as well as anytime treats. There are also inside items like candles, potpourri, dried flowers, berries and seeds that can help gardeners bring the outside in.
“I wanted to give people lots of ideas on how to use pots in their home furnishings,” Wilkinson explained.
