Robert Gelder of Brownsville succeeded Steve Bauer on the Kitsap Board of County Commissioners.

Commissioners Josh Brown and Charlotte Garrido chose Gelder Monday morning, according to a statement from the county. Gelder took the oath of office 6:30 p.m. in Port Orchard, before the regular County Commission meeting.

Gelder fills the District 1 position, which represents Bainbridge Island, North Kitsap and parts of Central Kitsap. Steve Bauer of Hansville resigned from the position this month to spend more time with his family.

Kitsap County Democrats made Gelder their top choice to replace Bauer in February. Gelder was one of six candidates for appointment to the commission.

“I’m honored to have been chosen to represent and work for the citizens of Kitsap County,” Gelder said in the statement. “This is an important time for our County, and the challenges are great.”

Gelder, 44, has worked as director of fund development for Martha & Mary for seven years. He served two terms as chairman of the 23rd Legislative District Democrats and served on the county’s Citizens Budget Committee. While a candidate for appointment, he said he would resign his position at Martha & Mary if named to the commission.

Commissioners earn $109,907 a year. They approve laws, set policies, and manage a $325 million budget. Terms are for four years, but Gelder will have to run in the next election to complete Bauer’s term, which expires in 2012.
