Get your fill of coho at Sept. 10 Salmon Slam — A delicious way to help our children | Kingston Kiwanis

Scheduled for Sept. 10, this event is going to be a “must” in town.

Kiwanis is a worldwide service club that raises money to support children, and every penny we raise here goes right back into our community.

Our Kiwanis Club is having a Salmon Slam from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Village Green Community Center to raise funds for our projects. You do not want to miss this delicious way to help our children and neighbors. Fresh coho salmon was flown in for free from Frederick Sound in southeast Alaska by Alaska Airlines in support of this fundraiser. Salmon will be available (whole or gutted) for $7 per pound, 50 percent nonrefundable deposit. Maximum order is six fish (approximately 5 pounds each) with pickup from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 9. Order your fish by Sept.1.

You can’t beat this deal, but we tried to by scheduling a Salmon Dinner with all the trimmings that evening: $20 for adults, $10 for children, and children’s hot dog dinner for $5.

While you’re enjoying your dinner, you can purchase tickets for $5 for a chance to win a Holland America seven-day cruise for two, with an outside cabin and a deck. Tickets are limited.

You can choose a cruise to Alaska, Canada, Mexico, New England and the Caribbean. All you have to do is get to the port of departure — what a deal! (It sure would be fun to be in Mazatlan during the winter months for five bucks.) Order forms are available at www.greater kingstonkiwanis.weebly.com.

We had some great guest speakers. Paul Dorn, senior biologist for the Suquamish Tribe, discussed the effort to continue to work for clean water habitats for wildlife and working to reintroduce wild salmon back into Puget Sound making sure they don’t have to compete with hatchery fish. He made it pretty clear that we all have to do our share to ensure clean water and streams, and the Tribe and county are working to replace culverts that impede salmon migration.

Ebie Andrews, a health management coach of 22 years and author of “If You Have Gray Hair, Beware” (Amazon), gave a sobering narrative on how important it is for hospital patients, especially older ones, to have an advocate to protect their rights and help make decisions for them while in the hospital. Her book is a must for those who want to understand the pitfalls and solutions to ensure loved ones are not left to fend for themselves when they are at their most vulnerable.

The summer school food program is making sure our local youngsters who depend on breakfast and lunch during the school year don’t go hungry during the summer months. The S’Klallam Tribe supplies the food during the weekdays for those who have signed up for the program, and the Tribe, Kiwanis and Rotary make sure that the weekends are taken care of. What a great place we live in.

We will take care of the children’s booth at the Kingston Arts Festival, collect school supplies on Sept. 5 at Walmart, and support our Key Club on Sept. 8 during their Rally in Tacoma.

You should check out our club. There are many projects and lots of fun. We meet at the Village Green Community Center at 7 a.m. Thursdays. We have great speakers and lots of conversation. Contact our president, Rob Shoaf, at our website; or me at 360-509-9752.
