GHAAC prepares for community plan finalization

On June 9 GHAAC and Planning Committee members had an opportunity to see and comment on the results of the work done by Pete Sullivan, associate planner for Community Development in putting together a draft community plan for the Greater Hansville Area from the data compiled by the Futures Project and the Planning Committee. The draft will be presented at an open house at 1 p.m. on June 28 at the Greater Hansville Community Center. All area residents are urged to attend, to review the draft plan and to contribute their views. All input from that meeting will be taken into consideration in fine tuning the plan and producing an “almost final” draft.

That draft will be presented to GHAAC and the county planning committee again in July, and if they find it acceptable, it will then go to the county planning commission. When they have passed on it, it will go to the Board of Commissioners. If accepted by them, it will become a guideline used in issuing permits for development and other activity in the area. As soon as it is ready to present, the draft will be posted on the DCD website and copies will be made available at the library or other local places.

Concerns raised by citizens at the meeting included dangerous driving and speeding on Buck Lake Road and illegal use of fireworks daily in the Buck Lake and Point No Point areas. People living in these areas have asked for increased awareness, increased reporting to 911, and improved enforcement.

There was also a request to petition the county for a crosswalk across Hansville Road at the Buck Lake Road/Point No Point Road intersection.

Elizabeth Wilson of Olympic Property Group reported that they are looking at options for the land they own on the spine of the peninsula, behind Shorewoods and Driftwood Key, which was a tree farm. They have proposed harvesting 70 percent of the trees there, leaving 100-foot buffers on the south and west sides of the property. Logs will be removed via Hood Canal Drive. Currently they are improving a logging road to allow access to a 10-acre parcel between Hansville Road and Hood Canal Drive.

In response to an earlier request from Frank Fox for a committee to study emergency response times, Judy Foritano read a letter from NKF&R Chief Dan Smith giving the results of the fire commissioners’ study of a recent incident. GHAAC members were then asked if they saw a need for such a committee and no one suggested doing so.

The next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. on July 14 at the Greater Hansville Community Center.
