Girls run off at 3 a.m. due to belt spanking

Kitsap County Superior Court cases

The spanking of a young boy in a diaper with a belt led two girls ages 7 and 5 to fill a backpack with their clothes and leave their home at 3 a.m. in 28-degree weather.

That led to a 29-year-old Bremerton woman and her 46-year-old husband being in Superior Court Feb. 12 arrested on a warrant from Feb. 7 on three charges.

Both are charged with criminal mistreatment and unlawful imprisonment (five years in prison, $10,000 fine maximum each); and fourth-degree criminal mistreatment (90 days in jail, $1,000 fine.) Bail was $50,000 for each.

Court records say a Kitsap deputy responded Jan. 23 at 3:50 a.m. to the 7500 block of Highway 303 NE. Two children were outside a gas station alone, and one was not wearing shoes.

The suspect’s four children are known to police. A father of one was arrested when one was 7 weeks old and had healing rib fractures, a possible skull fracture and bruises on her body and face. Another incident the mom asked her sister to care for the children as she sought mental health assistance. A third case involved a 3-year-old wandering on a street saying her parents would not wake up, and the house smelled of cat feces. There were still twin 10-month-olds in the house. A fourth case involved a child showing up for preschool hungry and dressed inappropriately for the cold weather.

In this latest case, the two girls left the house because they were scared of their dad, who spanked their brother with a belt six times for not cleaning his room.

Both girls were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. One girl said she also had been spanked but about a year before. She said she wanted to take her brother, but she couldn’t unlock his door. “He shouldn’t be a parent if he’s going to act like that,” she said of her dad.

Officers went to the home, and it was a mess, including fly traps dangling from the ceiling with many dead flies stuck to them. There were five cats, and the house smelled of urine. Furniture was in disarray, and there were signs of fire hazards.

Since the children are locked in their rooms at night, they wear diapers. In the girls’ room there was old food on the floor, including a half-eaten hot dog. The mom said one child’s father was abusive to her and spent five years in prison.

The children were not taken into protective custody, “although the residence was absolutely deplorable,” but Child Protective Services said it would respond within 24 hours.
