OLYMPIA – Grace Chun, a freshman at Central Kitsap High School, spent last week as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Chun was one of 12 students who served as Senate pages for the fourth week of the 2015 legislative session.
The Senate Page Program is an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices, as well as delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.
“I really liked working in the legislative building with the people that I met so far this week. They’re really fun to work with and the staff is really nice,” Chun said. “Being on the floor was a very interesting experience as well. I thought it’d be quieter but things were all over the place and so many things were going on at once.”
She particularly liked the committee hearings because they taught her how a bill is processed into law.
Chun was sponsored by 26th Legislative District Sen. Jan Angel, R-Port Orchard.
Chun has played the piano for six years and the flute for three years. She is part of the cross country team and will be running track in the spring. She is also a member of the Key Club, the Honor Society and the Associated Student Body. Grace, 15, is the daughter of Chungein and Seingwoo Chun of Port Orchard.
