HANSVILLE — As spring slowly begins to show glimpses of sunny skies, many residents are looking more and more at taking road trips, visiting favorite parks and generally enjoying all the North End has to offer.
With the assistance of the Greater Hansville Area Traffic Safety Committee making strides in the community, residents are hoping visitors will slow down while driving through the area.
In an effort to reach that goal, the committee has been hard at work installing traffic calming devices.
“We got a four-way stop put in at Ponderosa Drive,” said committee member Neal Kellner. “It’s has had a dramatic affect on speed, it slows people down a little. People still run it, but at 45 miles per hour instead of 70.”
The group discussed installing speed pillows during a June 2006 meeting, which would also cause drivers to hit the brakes while in Hansville. Speed pillows are asphalt bumps that straddle the center and shoulder lines of the road, forcing at least one set of tires to drive over them, but allowing emergency vehicles to pass between them without slowing. They also cause less wear and tear on vehicles than speed bumps.
The group is now looking into having speed tables added to Hansville Road in the downtown area and in Cliffside, Kellner said. Speed tables resemble wider speed bumps and also cause less wear on vehicles.
“Our plan hasn’t solidified,” he said. “We have been talking with (Kitsap County) Commissioner Chris Endresen, and it sounds like there might be money in the next budget for these projects.”
In the meantime, the committee will continue to devise projects to bring reduce speeds in Hansville so pedestrians and drivers are safer.
