HANSVILLE — An older double-wide mobile home was heavily damaged in a fire late Jan. 12.

No firefighters or civilians were injured, reported Michele Laboda of North Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department crews were called to an address on the tip of the Kitsap Peninsula, on Foulweather Bluff Road, at 6:30 p.m. Several passersby reported flames coming from the approximately 750-square-foot structure.  Firefighters from NKF&R’s Hansville fire station arrived at the scene in five minutes and reported that the structure was partially involved in flames.

An adult male on scene, who identified himself as the property owner, said he’d been napping in his vehicle at the time of the fire and assured officials that there was no one inside the mobile home. The initial crew was able to slow the fire’s progress using water from the engine’s tank until additional personnel arrived to secure water supply from a nearby hydrant.

Though firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes, they remained on scene squelching hot spots until just after 9 p.m. Approximately one-half of the structure sustained heavy fire damage while the remainder was somewhat protected by a closed door.

The man told firefighters that he did not have insurance on the building. The American Red Cross is assisting the man with temporary lodging and other immediate needs. An investigator from the Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office also responded; the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Hoses stretched across lanes of travel from the fire scene to the fire hydrant caused Twin Spits Road to be closed at its intersection with Foulweather Bluff Road for more than an hour.
