The state Department of Ecology is wrapping up its Hansville toxins cleanup project after removing about 4,000 tons of contaminated material.

Crews should have the road and parking lots around the Hansville Grocery and Hansville Community Church repaved in the next two weeks, Project Manager Russ Olsen said Friday. A section of water line is also being replaced.

“We’ll leave it better than we found it,” Olsen said.

The $1.1 million, federally-funded project removed soil contaminated by diesel and gasoline fuel that seeped out of tanks buried at a former service station on the site. Olsen said all but “minimal” amounts of contaminated soil were removed in the cleanup, led by Wyser Construction of Snohomish.

Wyser went to work in early October. The project was expected to last two months.

Both lanes of Twin Spits Road were reopened last week but flaggers are still being used occasionally. Repaving will begin next week.
