HANSVILLE — The Point No Point lighthouse didn’t win a recent preservation grant competition, but it did place in the money.

The Seattle-Puget Sound Partners in Preservation Initiative will award $100,000 to the Hansville-based U.S. Lighthouse Society to renovate the historical light tower. It was among 11 Puget Sound landmarks to be awarded grants through the initiative. The results were announced Tuesday morning.

“We’re happy,” U.S. Lighthouse Society Executive Director Jeff Gales said. “It’s going to give us the opportunity to do the renovation work that needs to be done.”

The grant competition began in April with 25 preservation projects vying for a slice of $1.1 million in grant money. An online vote was used to select the top grant recipient, but the vote ended in a near tie May 12, with the schooner Adventuress and Seattle Town Hall earning top spots. The Point No Point lighthouse finished third.

Gales said the Society had requested $118,000 for renovations but later trimmed that figure to $100,000 at the request of Partners in Preservation.

The bulk of the money will be used to repair and reseal the aging light tower.

“The main concern is protecting the lighthouse from the elements,” Gales said.

The Partners in Preservation initiative is a joint effort of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
