“For 100 years, not a week has gone by in North Kitsap without the Herald. Through wars, the Great Depression, incredible growth and change in the area, this newspaper has come out each and every week. In recent times, we’ve doubled to twice a week, but the focus has never changed. The Herald continues to chronicle the births, deaths, weddings, fires, accidents, new businesses, tribes, government decisions, happenings in the schools, sports, ferry funding and lack of funding. To mark this centennial of publication, we’re celebrating in many ways during the course of the year. There will be special stories in the Herald, displays, a reprint of the first issue of the Herald, and of course, a birthday party for everyone in the community. More information about all of these special events will be coming as the weeks and months go by. It’s really a celebration of being a longtime member of all the communities within North Kitsap, said Herald publisher Doug Weese. Today, the Herald looks back to its beginnings, to those first Heralds printed by Peter Iverson on Feb. 1, 1901 and to the news of a community’s growth and change over these hundred years. Countless hours of research by volunteers from the Poulsbo Historical Society have made this birthday celebration possible for our readers. They dug old papers out of boxes in attics, read book after book of ancient issues and culled information for you. The history of the Herald is also the history of North Kitsap recorded one week at a time. It is a history made possible thanks to loyal readers who supported a fledgling newspaper 100 years ago, and today.
