POULSBO — A 69-year-old Indianola man was airlifted to Seattle after colliding his truck head-on with another truck just north of the Bond Road, Big Valley Road and Little Valley Road intersection Thursday morning.
Dennis Murphy was driving a 1994 Ford Explorer northbound on Bond Road around 10:30 a.m. when he crossed the center line and struck a second vehicle, a 2004 Schwann’s delivery truck, which was headed southbound on Bond Road.
Murphy was airlifted to Harborview Trauma Center for injuries to his head, lower extremity and chest, said Poulsbo Fire paramedic Andy Plenge.
Murphy was wearing his seatbelt, however, Washington State Patrol troopers reported that alcohol could have been a factor in the accident.
The delivery truck was driven by Donato Castandea, 30, of Port Orchard. He was transported to a local fire station and treated for injuries.
A passenger in the delivery truck, Maurice Peterson, 41, of Bremerton, was also transported to a local fire station to be treated for injuries. Neither Peterson nor Castandea were wearing seatbelts.
Traffic in both directions on Bond Road was closed for two hours while police, firefighters and paramedics were on the scene.
Washington State Patrol is investigating the accident.
Poulsbo family hurt
in one-car crash
POULSBO — A Poulsbo woman and her 4-year-old child were injured in one-car collision Aug. 31 around 6:30 a.m. at State Route 3 and Equestrian Drive.
Megan Milyard, 32, of Poulsbo, was driving southbound on SR 3 in a 1999 Dodge Intrepid and crossed over the center line. She then overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The car then went down an embankment for 50 feet and came to rest against a tree.
The impact was on the driver’s side back door, where 4-year-old Makenna Milyard was situated in a car seat. Because she was properly restrained, she suffered minor injuries but did have lacerations from broken glass. Megan Milyard complained of back pain and both were transported to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
Poulsbo Fire Department officials said child safety seats, when used properly, reduce the risk of death in car accidents. For more information about properly installing child seats, call Marcy Powell at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital at (360) 662-1198 or visit www.safekids.org.
Washington State Patrol is investigating the accident.
Burn piles spark
1-acre brush fire
EGLON — An acre of grassland was charred Tuesday afternoon after one of three burn piles got away from the property owners.
North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a large field on Hansville Road just north of Eglon Road shortly before 2 p.m. Aug. 31.
Firefighters applied water to the 1-acre blaze which immediately stopped the fire’s spread, however, it took two hours for firefighters to completely extinguish it.
While the county burn ban was lifted earlier this week, fire officials still advise residents to be careful.
“Although the burn ban has been lifted, we’re still counting on citizens to exercise caution with outdoor fires,” said NKF&R spokeswoman Michèle Laboda. “Make sure fire breaks — preferably down to bare dirt — are in place around burn piles, keep a means of extinguishment handy and never leave a fire burning unattended.”
Outdoor burning was banned in the county’s Urban Growth Areas in 2001 but wherever outdoor fires are still legal, most agencies require burn permits.
For more information about outdoor burning rules, contact NKF&R at (360) 297-3619 or the Poulsbo Fire Department at (360) 779-3997.
