While their parents learn about being prepared for a home emergency or perhaps get their blood pressure checked, local kids can check out fire trucks and maybe go home with both a helmet and a bicycle Saturday at South Kitsap Fire and Rescue’s Safety Awareness Fair.

The seventh annual event is sponsored by SKFR and local law enforcement agencies such as the Port Orchard Police Department and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. Along with a fire truck, ladder truck and ambulance, it will feature police vehicles and a cement truck for kids to see close-up.

SKFR Medical Officer and Battalion Chief Mike Wernet said about 250 bicycle helmets will be given away to kids. As in years past, used bicycles will be given away to needy kids.

For those who already have bicycles, activities include a bike rodeo, a bike safety check, helmet fitting and a riding safety course.

Adults can learn about car seat safety, how to keep water activities safe and a variety of health information, including free blood pressure checks.

Emergency information, such as how to prepare your home and family for fires or other disasters, will also be readily available.

Other agencies participating in the event include the Red Cross, Washington State Patrol, the South Kitsap School District, the Port Orchard Kiwanis, the SK Kiwanis Breakfast Club, Kitsap ready Mix and SK Ham Radio.

Then Sunday, SKFR will be hosting a “CPR Sunday” where anyone is invited to “learn or renew their CPR(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) skills.”

SKFR Capt. Jennifer Schmidt said the event is a fundraiser for next month’s Relay For Life event, and a $25 donation is requested for the four-hour class.
