Competition is Nov. 15 at The Admiral Theater
The Miss West Sound Organization will hold its annual Miss West Sound and Miss West Sound’s Outstanding Teen Competition on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. at The Admiral Theater, 515 Pacific Ave. in Bremerton.
The competition will include 12 contestants from around the Kitsap County area.
Executive Director Amanda Cheatham said she is impressed with the caliber of this year’s contestants.
“We are very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious and talented young women who have entered the competition,” Cheatham said. “With the number of outstanding contestants, it will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss West Sound and Miss West Sound’s Outstanding Teen.”
Contestants will compete in five phases, including talent, interview, lifestyle and fitness, evening wear and onstage question.
This year, the organization is awarding $10,000 in scholarships.
During their year of service, Miss West Sound and Teen will travel across the Kitsap region, speaking to government officials, business leaders, community groups and all types of citizens about their platforms and encouraging them to become involved in their causes. They will also be eligible to compete for the Miss Washington and Miss Washington’s Outstanding Teen titles in May and July 2015, respectively.
“Miss West Sound and Teen will not only serve as role models for young women and as an ambassador for the Miss America Organization, they will also urge girls and young women to develop their leadership skills and to take an active role in their communities,” said Jill Nicks, Assistant Director of the Miss West Sound Organization.

Music from America to be performed
The Bremerton Symphony will perform “Music Made in America” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts 1500 13th St., Bremerton.
The concert will include the best of American music from its roots in Colonial-era Shape-Note songs, through the 19th Century Boston symphonist John Knowles Paine, to the 20th Century hits of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and Duke Ellington, with an entertaining touch from Herrmann’s Psycho and Cage’s 4’33”. Additionally, a new work by local Charles Berry will be performed.

Kitsap Senior Singles to meet Nov. 16
Kitsap Senior Singles (KISS) will meet at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at 3201 Pine Road N.E. in East Bremerton at The Willows on the first floor. All single seniors are invited for the potluck. Bremerton City Council hosts budget workshop
The Bremerton City Council will host a budget workshop from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Council Conference Room located on the sixth floor of the Norm Dicks Government Center at 345 Sixth St.
The budget workshop is open for the general public to attend, however no opportunities will be provided for input or participation. If an additional budget workshop is necessary, it will be on Nov. 20.
KCF offers grant workshop to nonprofits
The Kitsap Community Foundation is offering a seminar to help local nonprofits apply for grants from the foundation. The seminar will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Nov. 19 at the United Way of Kitsap County conference room, 647 Fourth St. in Bremerton.
The workshop is designed to help Kitsap County nonprofits navigate the grant cycle for the foundation and guide them in how to put their best foot forward when applying for grants from the foundation. The training is optional and will include information about deadlines and the online application process.

Program on housing and poverty in Kitsap County
The League of Women Voters of Kitsap will present a community education program on Housing and Poverty Issues in Kitsap County on Nov. 19 at the Eagle’s Nest, 1195 N.W. Fairgrounds Road, Bremerton.
The event will begin with coffee at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program from 10 a.m. to noon.
The program will focus on elements of Kitsap’s social safety network. Speakers are Kurt Weist, executive director of the Bremerton Housing Authority, and Monica Bernhard from Kitsap Community
