KINGSTON — The North Kitsap Heritage park has officially opened for use, following months of work by volunteers.

The 430-acre park includes about six miles of trails, which are open to walkers and bicyclists. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on the trails by county code. Its main entrance is located about one mile north of Indianola Road on Miller Bay Road.

Trailwork at the park was spearheaded by the North Kitsap Heritage Park Stewardship Group, as the county had little money to contribute. Over the last year the volunteers cleared out the Scotch broom that had tangled many of the property’s paths and regraded several trails.

Volunteers are still working to improve the parking lot, which has space for about 10 vehicles. They will also be putting up an information kiosk at the entrance.

Kitsap County acquired the core property from Olympic Property Group but is still searching for funds to purchase an adjacent 380-acre “option property” from Olympic.
