chase ends in arrest
A Spokane man led law enforcement officials on a hot and wild pursuit through two counties earlier this week.
The chase started in Jefferson County shortly before 8 p.m. July 20, where it was reported multiple times to local law enforcement that a possibly intoxicated person was driving southbound on State Route 101.
A responding Washington State Trooper observed William J. Yound, 27, driving a white 2002 Chevrolet pick up truck over the center line westbound on State Route 104 in Jefferson County and initiated a pursuit.
According to the WSP report, Yound turned onto Center Road, made a U-turn in a construction road and attempted to hit a WSP Trooper car head on. Yound then drove eastbound on SR 104 and pulled into the Shine Pit where he struck the WSP trooper car, causing minor damage.
Yound reportedly then got back on eastbound SR 104 again and crossed the Hood Canal Bridge into Kitsap County, where his tires were spiked, flattening the left rear tire.
However, Yound continued driving and turned southbound onto State Route 3. Poulsbo Police Department spiked the vehicle again at SR 3 and SR 305, flattening the left front tire, but Yound continued driving.
He then crossed the SR 3 median and started traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on SR 3. Yound’s car was stopped by trooper cars to end the pursuit in the median at the Sherman Hill overpass. Yound then got out of the car and fled on foot before he was caught and taken into custody. He is being investigated for drug impaired driving and eluding law enforcement. His truck also caught fire and was put out by Poulsbo Police.
Dad saves daughter
from near-drowning
MILLER BAY — A 6-year-old girl was rescued by her father after she was found floating in the deep-end of the Miller Bay Estates community pool this week.
The father told Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies Wednesday that he was with the girl in the deep end, but got out for a moment to chase down his 2-year-old son. When he returned to the pool, he found the girl at the bottom of the pool’s deep end.
The father pulled his daughter from the pool and found her to be unconscious and not breathing. He performed CPR on her while a bystander called 911.
By the time North Kitsap Fire & Rescue medics arrived on the scene, the girl was breathing on her own. She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.
The father said she was not underwater for more than two minutes.
Pregnant woman injured in rear-end collision
KINGSTON — Two people, including an expectant mother, were injured in a rear-end collision July 21 at the intersection of Bond Road and Port Gamble-Suquamish Road.
North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews arrived on the scene just before 1 p.m. Wednesday and found two cars in the southwest-bound lane of Bond Road, partially blocking the busy route.
A mother and school-aged child, who were in the rear-ended car and were both wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, denied any injuries and refused medical treatment or transport.
The second car sustained significant damage on its front end. It was driven by the pregnant woman who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. She was transported to Silverdale’s Harrison Hospital.
Her fiance, who was in the passenger seat, was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious facial injuries after hitting the cars’ windshield. He was transported to Naval Regional Medical Center in Bremerton.
Washington State Patrol and Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office were on the scene to investigate the cause of the accident.
Motorcyclist injured
after striking car
POULSBO — A 60-year-old man was injured after trying to stop on his motorcycle at Finn Hill and NW Cedar Lane this week.
Poulsbo Fire Department crews were called to the scene shortly after 11 a.m. July 21.
Bystanders said the man was trying to avoid hitting a stopped car at the intersection while heading eastbound on Finn Hill. However, the biker struck the rear right fender of the car and was knocked out of his seat, onto the road and was found under the car.
He complained of ankle pain and a headache and was transported to Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton by PFD.
