CENTRAL KITSAP — Kitsap County’s Department of Public Works begins road improvements at the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and Central Valley Road beginning the second week in October.
The project widens the existing travel lanes, constructs 5-foot sidewalks and installs left-turn lanes on all four quadrants of the intersection. The project is designed to improve operational efficiency and road safety.
In addition to widening the roadway, the project replaces the existing traffic-signal system and installs new roadway illumination. Also, due to the roadway widening, gravity block walls will be installed along the perimeter of the project and the above-ground utilities will be relocated. New stormwater collection, conveyance and treatment facilities are also part of the project.
Traffic studies show the intersection of Fairgrounds Road and Central Valley Road as a high-traffic area, with a significant number of rear-end collisions recorded. By constructing left-turn lanes on all four legs of the intersection, safety is improved.
The intersection also experiences a considerable amount of pedestrian traffic generated from three local schools and a neighborhood shopping center. To accommodate the increased foot traffic and to improve pedestrian safety, 5-foot sidewalks on both sides of the roadway are included as part of the project.
Motorists can expect one lane of travel open on all four legs of the intersection during construction. Traffic delays are expected, but minimized as best possible. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times.
The $2 million construction contract was awarded to Nordland Construction NW from Nordland, Washington. The contractor is scheduled to begin work the second week in October and will conclude spring 2017. Work will occur during normal working hours between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
