KINGSTON — An Indianola man was arrested for hit and run and assaulting sheriff’s deputies July 25.

Albert Smith, 50, was found a few blocks from the scene of a hit and run with property damage on West Kingston Road. The car matching the description of damage from the scene was also found within a few blocks and was registered to Smith’s wife. Smith and his wife were found by sheriff’s deputies.

According to the report, the seat placement indicated Smith was driving the car, which allegedly hit and brought down a small tree onto the road and struck a “Curve Ahead” sign and an electrical box on West Kingston Road, between Barrett Road and Marshall Lane, just before midnight Wednesday.

Smith allegedly began acting aggressively toward the deputy that placed him in handcuffs. Another deputy arrived and interviewed his wife, who allegedly gave inconsistent stories as to what happened to their car. At one point, she told officers they often leave the keys in the car for friends to use, and the car must have been stolen from the Filling Station where they were that night.

The report states the wife “showed obvious signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, emotional ups and downs, erratic behavior and passive aggression,” as well as the “odor of intoxicants.”

Smith during this time was repeatedly kicking the patrol car door from the inside and screaming obscenities. A deputy opened the car door to speak with Smith, who then kicked at the officer and attempted to escape from the car. Two deputies brought Smith to the ground to stop him, and Smith allegedly began to threaten to kill the officers.

Washington State Patrol troopers also arrived as backup.

Smith was charged with third-degree assault, hit and run (unattended property damage), obstructing law enforcement, harassment and DUI. He was booked into Kitsap County Jail on $75,000 bail.
