Ryan Robinson has joined the staff of the Port Orchard Independent, the Bremerton Patriot and the Central Kitsap Reporter as a summer intern.
Despite being an intern, going on coffee runs and making copies are not in Robinson’s job description.
“We plan for Ryan to work on actual content for the papers,” said Leslie Kelly, the editor of the Reporter and Patriot. “He will be writing stories, taking pictures and conducting interviews.”
Currently, Robinson is enrolled at Olympic College, where he plans to earn an associates degree before transferring to a four-year university.
Robinson was the recipient of the Scripps Howard Journalism Scholarship, an award that will play a large part in enabling Robinson to receive a post high-school education, he said.
Robinson graduated from Port Orchard’s South Kitsap High school in June.
The son of a Navy sailor, Robinson spent the early part of his life in Honolulu and San Diego before moving to Port Orchard in 2004. He attended local elementary and junior high schools and participated in martial arts and soccer.
Currently, he lives with his mother, Tracey, and sister, Emily, in Southworth.
Despite not participating in SKHS’s journalism program, Robinson has had an interest in journalism for several years.
His fascination with current events and his enthusiasm for writing were strong factors in his decision to pursue reporting, he said.
In his free time, Robinson enjoys meeting people and reading.
He also likes being in new places and traveling, when possible.
If he can, Robinson likes to spend his time outdoors with friends.
While with Sound Publishing papers, he will be covering a variety of topics, ranging from local sports to municipal meetings.
