POULSBO — Melanie Peterson, a second-year student at Northwest College of Art and Design, is the 2016 recipient of the Barbara Krell Memorial Scholarship.

She designed the winning logo for the 2016 Viking Fest.

Peterson is the daughter of Mark Peterson of Gig Harbor and Angela Tufts of Bremerton. She attended Olympic High School, enjoys drawing, photography and reading, and plans to become a well-known graphic designer and illustrator in Seattle.

“I chose NCAD because the school looked very promising, the portfolios of the students before me were amazing and I knew I would be able to do amazing work like that here too,” she wrote in a scholarship biography. “Plus, the fact that you get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four is great. It means that I can get out into my field faster than at a different college.”

What she likes about Poulsbo: “The beautiful scenery, cute shops, and diversity of art work around the town, especially the Norwegian styles.”

What she likes about NCAD: “The diversity of students around the school, the amazing landscape, and the caring and helpful faculty members. There are wide variety of art styles and techniques to discover at NCAD, which benefits all of the students.”

The $1,200 scholarship is named in honor of Barbara Krell, an amateur artist who was an art docent for a number of years at a local grade school. She died of breast cancer on Jan. 1, 2000.

Of the scholarship amount, $1,000 is donated by Krell’s husband, Ron, former long-time director of the Viking Fest Corporation; $250 is donated by John and Kim Tilton, the parents of Carrie Tilton-Brazeau.

Tilton-Brazeau, a professional graphic designer and illustrator, graduated from Northwest Academy of Art and Design and is the only three-time recipient of the scholarship. She died in 2014 from sudden cardiac arrest; she was 29.

Viking Fest is an annual celebration that coincides with Norway’s Constitution Day. This year’s celebration is scheduled for May 20-22 and features a parade, carnival, cultural reenactments, live entertainment, and contests.
