KINGSTON — After two years of lobbying, fundraising and waiting, Kingston High School’s Buccaneer Field finally lit up this week.
Stadium lights were installed and tested at the field Tuesday evening, and the Kingston football team conducted its first practice under the new lights Wednesday. Tonight, the team will play its homecoming game at the field at 7 p.m.
“Our kids are on cloud nine,” Kingston head football coach Dan Novick said. “Our fans are excited. I mean, it’s Kingston. Besides a little mud on your shoes, it’s a fun atmosphere.”
The school hopes the new lights will be a boon to its sports programs, bringing in spectators that would not normally make the trip to Poulsbo to watch home games.
“It’s exciting,” Kingston girls soccer head coach Craig Smith said. “I think we’re going to have a lot of community members that don’t normally come out.”
The North Kitsap School Board voted in April to apply $140,000 of previously uncommitted funds to the lights project. Volunteers from all over North Kitsap raised about $60,000 to cover most of the remaining cost of the lights.
“I can’t share how happy I am,” Smith said. “I spent a lot of time trying to get lights in there.”
