Kalac enters ‘not guilty’ plea

David Michael Kalac and his attorney entered a plea Nov. 14 to charges in the Nov. 4 death of a South Kitsap woman.

They pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Amber Lynn Coplin.

Kitsap County deputy prosecutor Robert Davy said the arraignment was completed with the formal entry of Kalac’s plea.

Davy said the hearing also confirmed Kevin “Andy” Anderson’s status as Kalac’s attorney. After his arrest, Kalac’s family attempted to find another attorney to take the case but was unsuccessful. Anderson, a longtime deputy prosecutor, started at the public defender’s office earlier this month.

Superior Court Judge Anna M. Laurie, who presided over Kalac’s first two court appearances, assigned Judge Jeannette Dalton to the case.

“At the hearing, the judge will enter any motions from the attorneys,” Davy said.

Davy and Farshad Talebi, a deputy prosecuting attorney, are the prosecutors in the case.
